Learn about our Anti-Racism Awareness Program

The Anti-Racism Awareness Program is an initiative of Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society, a registered non-profit organization in British Columbia since 1987. PICS Society provides a broad spectrum of programs and services, including Employment, Settlement, Language, Social, and Housing Services. Our Services assist newcomers, seniors, farm workers, women and youth.

PICS Society has delivered various projects over the past few years to combat racism and discrimination. We have successfully conducted Anti-Racism Awareness Workshops and Art exhibition.

These projects have engaged, educated, and empowered a number of people from different communities, their families, and members of the public to recognize and combat racism and discrimination, both online and in local communities.

Dr. Moussa Magassa, a former professor at the University of Victoria, graciously agreed to host our Anti-Racism Forum in collaboration with our team. His unique and impactful experience at the university, as well as other work in the field of intercultural studies and anti-racism education and training, have been incredibly beneficial to our project.

Racism and Anti-Racism

What is Racism?

Racism is a way of thinking, creating, and implementing policies and laws that create inequitable opportunities and outcomes for people based on race. It exists on the individual level but most importantly, racism exists in the institutions and structures of our society.

What is Anti-Racism?

Anti-Racism is the commitment to fight racism wherever you find it, including yourself. Anti-racism includes a range of ideas and political actions designed to counter racial prejudice, systemic racism, and the oppression of specific racial groups.
